Skillswise
- Resources for Entry Level 3 and Level
1 Literacy and Numeracy
2009 - BBC
A refresh of the BBC's much loved Skillswise
site and brand.
 |
| Site
awaiting launch. |
|
- The Skillswise site had been
around for a number of years
and was looking tired. The layout
used the old BBC Barley template
and to ensure that it would
stay around a bit longer it
needed to be moved into the
new wider Barlesque templates.
- As part of the refresh we
looked at ways of improving
the site without actually adding
any new content (as there was
no budget for new content).
Since the tutors often asked
for lesson planning tools, I
suggested a simple list application
that would allow the tutors
to 'favourite' various modules
from across the site and add
these to a list, which could
be given an appropriate name
eg 'students with dyslexia'
and then passed on to a student
in a lesson plan format. By
introducing this as a feed on
the homepage, it looked like
new content was coming in and
gave the site a sense of being
updated when it wasn't.
- Although the site content
modules were well-loved, it
was hard for tutors to find
anything on the site - an improved
search and clearer site structure
should now help.
- Site awaiting launch.

Raw
- Skills for everyday life
2009 - BBC
The BBC's latest adult learning website
- Beta release with more sections and
improvements ongoing.
| |
- Video targets users who don't
usually respond well to traditional
learning. Allows the user to
learn at their own pace.
- Simple, clean interface, text
is kept to a minimum so as not
to discourage users with learning
difficulties or poor reading
skills.
- An accessibility control panel
allows the user to change the
text and background colours
not just in the html, but in
the flash content too. This
can be used to make text, buttons
and subtitles easier to read.
- For first-time computer users
there is a simple one key shortcut
to content that will get them
familiar with the mouse and
keyboard quickly.

Ouch!
- It's a disability thing!
2008/2009 - BBC
The BBC's disability website - Features,
Blogs, Podcast, News, Talk and more
(new blogs and message boards are still
waiting to go live).
| |
- Ouch! team found that many
users only visited the message
boards, bypassing the quality
news, features and other content
on the rest of the site. A community
panel that appears on every
page (including blogs and message
boards) was introduced, which
showcases the most commented
on and popular stories to the
message board users. This works
in reverse for non-message board
users as it showcases the most
recent posts in blogs and forums.
This community column pulled
all the various elements of
the site together in one place.
- Ouch! caters for users with a wide range of disabilities. Most sites that offer accessibility settings provide the user with a text-only cut-down version of the site. I wanted to provide the users with a site experience that was identical to that of a non disabled user. When you select a colour chip in the accessibility control panel (at the top-right of the site) it changes all graphics on the site - providing a true alternative.
- An accessible content management
system was created for use by
the Editor and other blind members
of the Ouch! team. This allowed
them to find content and articles
more easily and put the site
together faster.
